The Perfect Dog!

One of the most often-asked questions I get is “Is there a hypo-allergenic dog?” People are looking for a non-shedding, non-barking, non-maintenance dog. Guess what? When you find one, let me know! There is no “perfect dog” out there, but there are some breeds that are less likely to cause allergies.

All dogs have the potential to cause problems for allergy-sufferers, but the breeds that work best for people with allergies are those with poodle-like coats. The list includes poodles, of course, but also Maltese, bichon frises, and doodle-oodle mixes (Labradoodles, cockapoos, and so on). Some people also believe that dogs with little or no hair, like the Chinese crested, are better choices.

The problem with the fur theory is that it’s not the fur that causes the problems. Allergies are caused by a substance found in the dog’s skin. This clings to the dog’s skin and hair, and ends up everywhere as the dog moves around the house. There is no escape! Yes, you can get a dog without hair, but not one without skin. If you really want a hypo-allergenic pet, get a reptile, or a fish. Don’t get a bird because the feathers and dust will really get you!

There are some breeds, however, that are reported to be better tolerated by those with allergies than other breeds. The American Kennel Club lists these breeds that seem to be the “best” : Bedlington Terriers, Bichon Frises, Chinese cresteds, Irish Water spaniels, Maltese, all poodles, Portuguese water dogs, schnauzers, and Wheaten terriers.

In general, smaller dogs are less of a problem because they put out smaller amounts of allergen. Frequent bathing can help, or sprays like Allerspray, as well as keeping Fido out of your bedroom so you can have an allergy-free sleep

So is there a perfect dog? No, but any dog that you love and that loves you back sounds pretty good to me!

Till next time, Dr. Steve
